"Then and Now Series No. 1"

R. v. Bywaters and Thompson
Her Honour Jean Graham Hall, LLM and Gordon D. Smith, FRICS, ACIArb

A well-known (retired) Circuit Judge, and her collaboratorrvbywaters.jpg (7988 bytes), a Chartered Surveyor, have followed up their earlier (and most successful) book on "The Expert Witness" with a work which compares in terms of public interest. Given the identical facts, would the outcome of a trial such as R. v. Bywaters and Thompson be the same today? R. v. Bywaters and Thompson was one of the most "sensational" trials of the 20th century - a trial held at a time when hanging was very much in the forefront as upholding the draconian tradition of the English Criminal Law.

This is the second in the series of books by the present two authors comparing a case of great public interest in the 1920s with how it would be handled today in the light of subsequent changes in the law, and what would be the likely verdict in the light of advances in forensic evidence, etc.
